St. George sand hides a hard caliche layer that water can't get through. Add 100-degree summers, and a Wasatch Front landscape won't survive here. Avalawn designs for the desert you actually live in.

Most of Southern Utah has sandy soil with a hidden problem beneath the surface: a hard, cement-like layer called caliche. Sand alone drains fast, but caliche blocks that drainage. So when a hole is dug or a sprinkler system is installed without planning, water gets trapped above that layer instead of soaking through.
The roots end up sitting in water and slowly drown, even though the surrounding soil looks dry and sandy. Knowing how to break through caliche, or design around it, is what keeps a landscape alive in the long term, rather than failing underground where you can't see it happening.
Heat is the other piece. St. George summers are hotter and longer than anywhere else we work in Utah, so watering times, plant choices, and shade matter more here than they would further north. A plan that works fine in Utah County can burn up in a St. George summer. We build our designs around this exact climate.
Took advantage of the winter discount on their filters and it saved us a ton of money on our irrigation revitalization project. We have been wanting to get our sprinklers up and running ever since we moved in but have never been able to fit it in our budget until now. Very fair pricing and a great crew to back it up.
If you have secondary water, you know the battle with your pressure. Luckily Kordell had just the right solution to fix my pressure issue in my back yard zone. They were in and out in a day with nothing left behind except a perfectly working system. Super pleased with the crew over at Avalawn.
We did our project in these months to save some money, and even in the freezing weather, the crew showed up with a great attitude. They were able to make our whole yard water wise in just a week. Xeriscaping some areas due to inefficiencies and overhauling the whole sprinkler system. 10/10 times would recommend these guys to take care of any of your irrigation needs.
Davin and Kordell (and crew) are the hardest workers! They turned my 200 foot back fence into a low maintenance beauty. Worked with me when adding/changing stuff. Kordell is very knowledgeable and saved me from having to replace the 9 trees I bought because we have secondary water. Got it done quick. AvaLawn went the extra mile to repair my fountain pump while adding some water lines that the original installer neglected to add. Kordell knew his stuff about fountains too! I would highly recommend!
We had Avalawn do our drip system, removal of a water feature, and install rock in all the boarders and beds. I can’t say enough good things about how well they did! They took a run down yard and made it look amazing! The pictures don’t do it justice. I will be referring them to anyone I know who is shopping for anything yard related. They were prompt and efficient. We have future projects we are saving up for and we will use them again!! Thank you so much Avalawn
We’ve had a persistent issue with our fountain for three summers and two other companies couldn’t figure it out. Kordell came out and pinpointed the issue super fast. He knew his stuff when it came to water features. While he was here he fixed our drip line that we didn’t even know had a leak. I’ve worked with plenty of contractors in my day but it's rare to find one that actually wants to help rather than doing the bare minimum. I highly recommend Avalawn!
I had Avalawn clean our waterfall, empty the reservoir tank and make sure our pump was working properly Eric did a wonderful job cleaning and refreshing the waterfall after years of buildup and yuck. It looks beautiful! He even went so far as to rearrange the rocks so that it sounded much more pleasing. They were easy to work with, and pricing was more than fair. I will definitely use them again.
It's often caliche. That hardpan layer under St. George's sandy soil can trap water right above it, drowning roots that look thirsty but are actually sitting in waterlogged soil. We check for caliche and plan around it before anything goes in the ground.
Yes, when it's designed for this specific climate. Drought-tolerant doesn't automatically mean heat-tolerant, so we choose plants proven to hold up through 100-plus-degree stretches.
Almost always, yes. St. George's longer, hotter summers mean different timing and duration than a Wasatch Front schedule, especially for anything newly planted. We build irrigation schedules around this specific climate rather than a one-size-fits-all Utah schedule.
Flash-flood runoff and heat exposure are the two big factors. We use grading, retaining structures, and drainage to route storm runoff safely, while choosing plants and hardscape that can handle direct desert sun.
Whether you're dealing with caliche soil, red rock terrain, or a summer that doesn't let up, Avalawn can design a landscape built for Southern Utah's real conditions. Reach out for a free quote.
