Why Highland homeowners work with Avalawn

Highland's lot sizes are what draw people here, and they're also the challenge. Sprawling lawns rack up serious water bills, big yards need structure to read as designed space instead of leftover field, and bench lots near American Fork Canyon add rocky soil, slopes, and hungry deer to the mix.

We plan for all of it. Avalawn designs Highland landscapes in zones: refined detail near the house, functional lawn where your family actually plays, and lower-water, lower-maintenance plantings across the rest of the lot. The result is a property that looks cohesive and finished without a full-time groundskeeper or a putting-green water bill.

Water features
Ponds, streams, and waterfalls are designed for properties with room to spare, where a water feature can be a destination instead of an accent.
Learn More
Landscape cleanups and seasonal care
Recurring care sized for large lots: pruning, bed upkeep, weed control, and seasonal cleanups that keep an acre from getting away from you.
Learn More
Irrigation and sprinkler systems
Irrigating an acre takes real design. We build zoned systems with smart controllers that water lawn, beds, and outer plantings differently, so big Highland lots stay green without waste.
Learn More
Irrigation repair and maintenance
On large properties, one stuck valve or broken head can waste thousands of gallons unnoticed. We service, tune, and winterize Highland systems to catch problems early.
Learn More
Water conservation
Shrinking turf to the areas you actually use and running the rest on drip can dramatically cut a large lot's water use. We show Highland homeowners where the savings are hiding.

Took advantage of the winter discount on their filters and it saved us a ton of money on our irrigation revitalization project. We have been wanting to get our sprinklers up and running ever since we moved in but have never been able to fit it in our budget until now. Very fair pricing and a great crew to back it up.

If you have secondary water, you know the battle with your pressure. Luckily Kordell had just the right solution to fix my pressure issue in my back yard zone. They were in and out in a day with nothing left behind except a perfectly working system. Super pleased with the crew over at Avalawn.

Had a major main water leak that we couldn't shut off and we couldn't get a hold of our usual guys. Thankfully, Avalawn was incredibly responsive giving us pricing right over the phone and having a tech out to fix the issue within a few hours.

We did our project in these months to save some money, and even in the freezing weather, the crew showed up with a great attitude. They were able to make our whole yard water wise in just a week. Xeriscaping some areas due to inefficiencies and overhauling the whole sprinkler system. 10/10 times would recommend these guys to take care of any of your irrigation needs.

Davin and Kordell (and crew) are the hardest workers! They turned my 200 foot back fence into a low maintenance beauty. Worked with me when adding/changing stuff. Kordell is very knowledgeable and saved me from having to replace the 9 trees I bought because we have secondary water. Got it done quick. AvaLawn went the extra mile to repair my fountain pump while adding some water lines that the original installer neglected to add. Kordell knew his stuff about fountains too! I would highly recommend!

We had Avalawn do our drip system, removal of a water feature, and install rock in all the boarders and beds. I can’t say enough good things about how well they did! They took a run down yard and made it look amazing! The pictures don’t do it justice. I will be referring them to anyone I know who is shopping for anything yard related. They were prompt and efficient. We have future projects we are saving up for and we will use them again!! Thank you so much Avalawn

We’ve had a persistent issue with our fountain for three summers and two other companies couldn’t figure it out. Kordell came out and pinpointed the issue super fast. He knew his stuff when it came to water features. While he was here he fixed our drip line that we didn’t even know had a leak. I’ve worked with plenty of contractors in my day but it's rare to find one that actually wants to help rather than doing the bare minimum. I highly recommend Avalawn!

I had Avalawn clean our waterfall, empty the reservoir tank and make sure our pump was working properly Eric did a wonderful job cleaning and refreshing the waterfall after years of buildup and yuck. It looks beautiful! He even went so far as to rearrange the rocks so that it sounded much more pleasing. They were easy to work with, and pricing was more than fair. I will definitely use them again.

FAQ

Highland Landscaping questions, Answered

How do I keep deer from destroying my landscaping in Highland?

Total prevention is unrealistic this close to the foothills, but smart design gets you most of the way there. We lean on plants deer usually pass over, and we position the most vulnerable plantings close to the house or inside fenced areas. Ask us to flag deer risk on your design plan.

What does it cost to irrigate an acre, and how do I bring that down?

A fully irrigated acre of turf in this climate can use several hundred thousand gallons per season, which is why we rarely recommend it. Shrinking the lawn to the areas you use, converting the rest to drip-irrigated beds and water-wise plantings, and running everything on a smart controller can dramatically cut outdoor water use while improving the property's appearance.

Our lot feels like a big empty field. How do you make it feel designed?

Structure. Large properties need trees planted with intent, beds with real depth, pathways that create destinations, and transitions between zones. We often anchor the far reaches of a lot with tree groupings and berms so the eye has somewhere to land, then increase detail as you move toward the house.

Can you landscape around horse property or outbuildings?

Yes. Plenty of Highland lots still include pasture, arenas, barns, or shops. We design landscapes that transition cleanly between the finished yard and the working parts of the property, with durable plantings, proper fencing lines, and drainage that keeps water away from structures.

We're on the bench and hit rock every time we dig. Is that a problem?

It's workable, and it's common near the canyon. Rocky bench soil changes how we plant trees, trench irrigation, and set wall footings, so we assess it up front rather than discovering it mid-project. In some cases, the rock becomes a design asset, incorporated into walls, steps, and dry creek beds.

Can a big project be phased over a couple of years?

Absolutely, and on large lots we often recommend it. A good master plan lets you install infrastructure and high-impact areas first, then add outer zones, hardscape, or a water feature in later phases without having to redo anything. You get a coherent result on a budget timeline that works for you.
