Landscaping Where the Neighborhood Meets the Mountain

Alpine yards end where the scrub oak starts, and Lone Peak takes over. Avalawn designs and installs landscapes that belong in that setting.

Why Alpine homeowners work with Avalawn

Landscaping in Alpine means working with the mountain. Lots climb and drop in ways that flat-ground designs can't handle. Native scrub oak and maple frame the property. Wildlife wanders through like it owns the place, and in late summer, the dry hillside above your back fence is something you think about.

Avalawn builds for that reality. We design landscapes that transition naturally from finished yard to native hillside, use boulders and stone that look like they came from the site, and select plantings that hold their own against the backdrop of the Wasatch.

Took advantage of the winter discount on their filters and it saved us a ton of money on our irrigation revitalization project. We have been wanting to get our sprinklers up and running ever since we moved in but have never been able to fit it in our budget until now. Very fair pricing and a great crew to back it up.

If you have secondary water, you know the battle with your pressure. Luckily Kordell had just the right solution to fix my pressure issue in my back yard zone. They were in and out in a day with nothing left behind except a perfectly working system. Super pleased with the crew over at Avalawn.

Had a major main water leak that we couldn't shut off and we couldn't get a hold of our usual guys. Thankfully, Avalawn was incredibly responsive giving us pricing right over the phone and having a tech out to fix the issue within a few hours.

We did our project in these months to save some money, and even in the freezing weather, the crew showed up with a great attitude. They were able to make our whole yard water wise in just a week. Xeriscaping some areas due to inefficiencies and overhauling the whole sprinkler system. 10/10 times would recommend these guys to take care of any of your irrigation needs.

Davin and Kordell (and crew) are the hardest workers! They turned my 200 foot back fence into a low maintenance beauty. Worked with me when adding/changing stuff. Kordell is very knowledgeable and saved me from having to replace the 9 trees I bought because we have secondary water. Got it done quick. AvaLawn went the extra mile to repair my fountain pump while adding some water lines that the original installer neglected to add. Kordell knew his stuff about fountains too! I would highly recommend!

We had Avalawn do our drip system, removal of a water feature, and install rock in all the boarders and beds. I can’t say enough good things about how well they did! They took a run down yard and made it look amazing! The pictures don’t do it justice. I will be referring them to anyone I know who is shopping for anything yard related. They were prompt and efficient. We have future projects we are saving up for and we will use them again!! Thank you so much Avalawn

We’ve had a persistent issue with our fountain for three summers and two other companies couldn’t figure it out. Kordell came out and pinpointed the issue super fast. He knew his stuff when it came to water features. While he was here he fixed our drip line that we didn’t even know had a leak. I’ve worked with plenty of contractors in my day but it's rare to find one that actually wants to help rather than doing the bare minimum. I highly recommend Avalawn!

I had Avalawn clean our waterfall, empty the reservoir tank and make sure our pump was working properly Eric did a wonderful job cleaning and refreshing the waterfall after years of buildup and yuck. It looks beautiful! He even went so far as to rearrange the rocks so that it sounded much more pleasing. They were easy to work with, and pricing was more than fair. I will definitely use them again.

FAQ

Alpine Landscaping questions, Answered

How do you landscape a steep lot without it turning into all retaining wall?

By mixing solutions. Terracing handles the steepest grade changes, but boulder outcroppings, planted slopes, and winding paths can absorb significant elevation change while looking natural. The goal is a yard that steps down the hillside gracefully instead of a stack of walls, and that balance is a design decision we make lot by lot.

Can you make our landscaping blend into the native hillside behind us?

That transition zone is one of our favorite parts of an Alpine project. We feather the design outward: refined plantings near the home, then natives like rabbitbrush, serviceberry, and ornamental grasses, then the existing scrub oak. When done well, you can't tell where the landscaping ends and the mountain begins.

Should I be thinking about fire-wise landscaping in Alpine?

If your lot backs the foothills, yes. Fire-wise doesn't mean bare gravel; it means keeping the first stretch around the home lean and well-irrigated, spacing and limbing up trees, choosing higher-moisture plants near structures, and keeping dead material cleaned out. We can fold these principles into the design without sacrificing its appearance.

Is scrub oak on my property a problem or an asset?

It’s usually an asset worth managing. Mature Gambel oak provides screening, structure, and a sense of place that money can't buy quickly. We selectively thin it for health and fire safety, clean up the understory, and design around the best stands rather than clearing them.

Can you incorporate the boulders already on our lot?

Gladly, and it usually improves the project. Native stone unearthed during grading can become steps, wall faces, water feature bones, or anchor points in planting beds. It saves hauling costs and guarantees the rock matches the setting, because it came from it.

Do you coordinate with builders on new custom homes in Alpine?

Yes. On custom builds, we prefer to get involved before the builder finishes grading, so downspout routing, soil stockpiling, and rough grade all serve the landscape plan rather than fight it. If your home is still under construction, that's the ideal time to bring us in.
